I don't know about you, but I'm always on the hunt for the best coffee tumbler. The problem is that there are so many different models out there, and they all have their own unique features. So how do you know which one will actually keep your coffee hot? I figured it was time to get serious and put this question to the test. Over the course of a week, we tested five different models and found that our favorite was made by Contigo Thermalock (the same brand as our upgrade pick).
What exactly is a Coffee Tumbler?
What is a coffee tumbler? It's a cup with a lid and a handle, used to keep your coffee hot. Okay, so that was pretty obvious. But there are many things you should know about this particular kitchen tool if you're going to buy one and start enjoying the benefits of having your own hot beverage on-the-go:
Some tumblers are made of stainless steel, and others are plastic. They can be insulated or not.
The best ones have lids that screw on tightly with tabs that keep them from falling off accidentally in transit or while you're drinking from them especially helpful if it's full of boiling hot liquid!
How We Tested
We put the best coffee tumblers to the test in a variety of environments. We tested them in a hot car (with the sun beating down on it), on a cold day, and at room temperature. We also tried them with different types of coffee: dark roast, light roast, flavored beans, etc., as well as different amounts of coffee from one cup up to 16 ounces. We used a temperature probe to check how hot they were after an hour and even left them out overnight so we could see how long they kept beverages warm enough to drink.
We've tested a lot of coffee tumblers and have narrowed down our favorite to be the Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide Mouth Stainless Steel Tumbler.
It's best for those who want an affordable, high-quality cup that will keep their beverages hot for hours on end. It's also ideal if you don't want to spend money on something with a lot of bells and whistles but still needs to keep your drink hot all day.
The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide Mouth Stainless Steel Tumbler has two things going for it: its inexpensive, lightweight aluminum construction makes it easy to carry around in your hand or backpack/purse; yet there are rubber grips on either side so you can hold onto the product no matter how hot its contents are (which helps avoid any potential burns). It also comes with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects something that sets it apart from other models we tested.
Thermos Stainless King
The Thermos Stainless King is our upgrade pick because it can keep your coffee hot for hours. It has a stainless steel lining and an insulated double wall that keeps heat in, so you can have a piping-hot cup of joe at your desk all day long. The lid has a rubberized coating that seals in the heat, and it also serves as a handy little coaster for your cup or mug to rest on. It’s fairly large at 17 ounces (500 milliliters), so if you drink more than one cup per day, this might not be the best option for you. But if you want something sturdy enough to last through years of use without losing its insulation capability or cracking under pressure and if you only drink one or two cups per day the Thermos Stainless King will serve well as an everyday travel mug and kitchen companion.
If you're looking for a no-frills, easy-to-clean tumbler that keeps your coffee warm for hours and has the lowest price of all our picks, we recommend the Contigo Autoseal West Loop. It's also got a unique design: The lid flips open automatically when you press it against your face, so you don't need to remove it from your lips. And since it's made from stainless steel, the West Loop won't stain or retain odors like some plastic models do a big plus if your commute involves getting into tight spaces with other people (or smelly subway cars).
The only downside is that there's no built-in strainer like on our other picks; if you want one of those features but can't find it in our top two options above, consider this one instead.
What else makes this model great? For starters, its 12 ounce capacity holds enough liquid to keep most people happy without being too heavy or bulky when filled up (it weighs just over half an ounce). This size also makes sense if your office coffee maker measures out cups using smaller units than 16 oz the Contigo holds less liquid than most travel mugs but more than most pint glasses.
A coffee tumbler should keep your coffee hot, be easy to clean, and still fit under your office coffee maker.
There's no point in having a coffee tumbler if it doesn't keep your coffee hot! We looked for products that could maintain the temperature of the liquid inside for at least 6 hours and tested each one for durability.
We also looked at how easy-to-use a product is. If you're going to be up early in the morning or late at night, you don't want to be struggling with a complicated lid or too many parts. We preferred containers with simple lids that didn't require any unwrapping before use; containers that had removable lids were also easier to clean than those with unbreakable plastic lids.
Finally, we wanted our top picks to fit under office coffee makers as well as smaller home machines, so they'll work no matter where you're getting your java fix.
The best coffee tumbler is the one that fits your lifestyle, but we believe that the Zojirushi SM-SA48-A Stainless Steel Travel Mug is the winner. It’s easy to clean and doesn’t have any parts that could break off in your dishwasher, it keeps coffee hot for hours without leaking, and its wide mouth opening makes it easy to sip from whether you’re on a road trip or at your desk during a busy day.
